17. SUGAR is not your friend

Along with my love of anti-ageing I find myself often discussing with my clients in consultation what they eat!

Whether treating lack of elasticity, acne, rosacea, wrinkles, pigmentation or open pores a contributing factor to how your skin presents, isn’t just about what you use on your skin but also what we put in our mouths….  Although, I am not a nutritionist there is evidence to prove that if the gut is not healthy it is very difficult to improve inflammatory skin conditions and in this case sugar can be a contributor.

When we consume sugar (wheat, white bread, pasta, alcohol, lollies, ice cream , packaged foods, fizzy drinks, pizza, commercial fruit juice) over time this can attach to the collagen in your skin through a process known as glycation.  Glycation can exacerbate skin conditions particularly acne, wrinkles and rosacea.

When it comes to treating inflammatory skin conditions, what we eat plays a big part in the results you will see when visiting the clinic.

Some tips to support your skin clinic treatments;

  • get plenty of beauty sleep – sleepless nights can lead to your body releasing a stress hormone; cortisol, which can cause your blood sugar levels to spike
  • try and lead a stress free life – remember to breathe and take time out for you; stress can also spike blood sugar levels
  • eat balanced meals – lowering your sugar intake doesn’t mean lowering your intake of all foods. Eat a well balanced diet high in antioxidants, fish and leafy greens
  • avoid starchy foods – particularly takeaways and commercially processed foods
  • Omega 3 essential fatty acids – these supplements are at the top of my list.  An excellent anti-inflammatory supplement that aids in restoring the lost lipids in our skin
  • eat good fats such as oily fish, avocado and olives – these foods aid in keeping your skin looking youthful

So, always remember SUGAR is not your friend 🙂
